Playing with Paper Dolls

Countless costumes and accessories decorate the pages of the vibrant paper doll books from the early ‘40s. Like many celebrity paper doll books, the volume below envisions actress Claudette Colbert in various scenarios on and off screen. Airliner Paper Dolls romanticizes new careers for women in the 1940s. Playing with paper dolls encouraged children to experiment with personal identity by constructing narratives based on their character’s clothing. While users were largely limited to dolls that conformed to feminine stereotypes, paper dolls allowed for agency and imagination in play.
